Because of the economic downturn, having an MBA is more common than ever. So that alone won’t help you stand out. And it’s difficult when you don’t have a lot of experience. But it’s not all bad. Employers don’t expect you to have a lot of experience. They are looking for effort. Here are some ways you can stand out:

When you reach out to an employer
Use common circumstances that connect people of all ages…maybe where they went to school, or a hobby of theirs.
Use the internet to learn what you can about an employer and use that information to connect.

Appearance
When you do get an interview, remember image is important. Dress for the job and company culture, not your age! That doesn’t mean dress
older, it means “Google” has one look, and an accounting firm has another. Go on the company’s website, and see the pictures of the employees and how they dress. Your confidence counts for a lot.

Tips courtesy of Stephen Viscusi

To accomplish yourself academically only to find out no employers are interested in what you have to offer can be very damaging. Don’t shrink back,
even though you may get no’s or doors don’t open immediately. Stay focused on what you want. Big breaks always tend to come when you keep moving in the direction towards them.

Here are some steps to keep you motivated:

Get out and connect with people going through the same thing.
Many people in their 20s are still trying to crack into the job market and you all can exchange advice to keep everyone positive.

Find a passion partner
Someone who’s encouraging and helps you remain passionate about finding a job.

Post sticky notes all around with positive affirmations.
Rejection takes shots at your self worth. Seeing positive messages reminds you that you are a worthy candidate for a job.

Even if you’re discouraged, fake it until you make it.
Act emotionally healthy because that trumps your education and qualifications. People assume emotional stability in your 30’s and if they don’t see it, that’s a red flag.

Keep salary requirements and general expectations reasonable Especially if you’ve been out of the marketplace for a while.

Offer to work on a per-project or temporary basis
So you can prove yourself to employers.

Also, if you have an unusual name. You might consider going by something more familiar, like Ally. Studies show employers hire people with more common names.

When you’ve been discouraged for a while, you have to cut yourself some slack! Take time out for stress-free activity that takes your mind off your employment situation.

As a woman in her thirties, not having a job can bring feelings of shame— but don’t hide GET OUT! Continue to socialize. Don’t let unemployment weaken your networking efforts. Go to events and free social gatherings. Interacting with others can keep you lively and hopeful and boost your self-confidence. You have to be seen in order to be considered.

To stand out amongst the other applicants you must flaunt all skill-sets that you have! And remind employers of them at every interview!

Keep in mind, employers often don’t think of women in their 40’s as very tech literate. It’s an unfortunate reality. You need to specify the applications you’ve mastered. Avoid basic applications like Word or web browsers. Concentrate on specialized software.

Also, you need to present yourself as current with the times. Your email address can tell employers a lot. If you’re still using AOL or CompuServe, replace it with something more modern, like gmail – better yet, create your own domain.

Tips courtesy of Stephen Viscusi

To keep yourself emotionally stable during a period of long-term unemployment, live each day as if you were already working. Create a schedule—humans thrive on routines. As a woman in her forties, self-esteem comes from self-improvements, true assessment and a lot of determination. What you think about, you will become. Half of the battle of getting a job is mindset.

As a woman in your fifties you shouldn’t give up. At this age it’s easy to feel obsolete because of your advanced age. But look on the bright side; you have a lot of lifestyle skills to offer. I suggest that you upgrade your skills set by taking classes at inexpensive places like community colleges, libraries and churches. There are also government-assisted programs that you can sign up for to learn basic computer skills.

For women in their 50’s, presentation is everything. That means doing anything and everything to help you groom even using Crest White Strips on your teeth. I also encourage shape ware like Spanx which is both flattering for women and men! I also want to encourage you to start a light exercise routine, such as walking to reduce stress and improve your health. Finally, remind yourself daily that your age is an asset, not a liability.

Traveling Off-Season
Consider checking into popular winter spots in the summer. When the weather warms up, their rates go down. Most of these places have outstanding pool areas, terrific spas, golf and dining so you get a 5-star vacation at a budget friendly price.

‣ Ski resorts become family friendly outdoor vacation spots in the summer months with structured programs that include hiking, putting bikes on the chair lifts and riding down, alpine slides, fishing and top notch accommodations.
‣ There’s really something to please everyone in the family – moms and dads can get alone time at the pool, spa or golfing, while kids are off doing the structured activities.

Just as an example of how much you can save, Arizona Resorts drop 80 percent after Memorial Day Weekend.

Daycation
Be a tourist in your own town and exploring places you would not go as a part of your daily routine. They make you feel the reason you moved somewhere in the first place.

‣ You can easily have minitrips without spending money on airfare or long car trips.
‣ Most zoos offer great animal interactions where you register online ahead of time and have very up close experiences in private tours.
‣ There are also shows that travel to cities that can make for exciting special events without spending on travel.
‣ Dads can enjoy a vacation with the family without taking too much time from work, mom can coordinate with other families, kids can discover why where they live is so awesome.

Added Value Trip
Added value is not a deep discount, but how you get a lot more bang for your buck. Cruises, resorts and other destinations all over the world do this to keep you at their resort with credits to be used for things like dining, spa or golf. All-inclusive vacations are terrific examples because for one price, you get your accommodations, meals, activities, alcohol and tipping.

‣ Added value also comes with things like free meals for kids or discounts at restaurants when you show the ticket stub for an attraction.
‣ Some destinations are better than others and team up to create partnerships you can find on the CVB Websites like Branson.
‣ Dads with big appetites get the most bang for their buck
‣ Mom has an opportunity to experience things like shopping at a resort without spending more.
‣ Kids get to have lots of hands on, camp fun without an additional fee.

As parents, we have to remember we were people first. Before we had kids, we all had lives and we can create lives again that include them, even though they’re no longer at home.

Make a dream list
This is the most important thing you can do, and Sue you just touched on this. The party planning venture you mentioned wanting to try is a perfect example of this. I tell people to write down and think about everything they’ve always wanted to try, accomplish or get better at. Then check off items on that list.

Get to know your spouse in a new way
Create new activities together doing things you both enjoy – dates, redecorating the house, taking a class or starting a hobby together.

Reconnect with your child/children who have left
Arrange a yearly trip, Skype with the kids or become Facebook friends. Also, send them care packages of favorite foods, magazines, tickets to activities where they live.

An affordable way to jazz up your nails by using semi-precious metal nail jewelry. These retail for $20 and are reusable! When it comes to putting them on, it’s so versatile… You can bring it to your salon to get them applied, whether you have natural nails, acrylics or gels. If you want to do it at home, just apply a little nail glue or a thin layer of topcoat and set it. It will last for days!

These are fake lashes inspired by the art of Chinese paper cutting. In fact, each style has a symbolic meaning rooted in Chinese culture. These are Paperself Lashes and they come 20 designs and in two sizes so you can accentuate the corners of your eyes with the smaller lashes for a subtle daytime look or make a statement with the full lashes for special occasions.

They’re $18 for a set. They look difficult, but these are so easy to apply…you measure and cut the lashes, and then just glue and wait a few seconds for the glue to dry. And you can flatten them if they curl too much. Plus, if you want a really dramatic look, use the leftover lashes and apply them close to your lower lash line at the outer corners.
